the best part of painting pomegranate may be having the fruit around for later, but this photo was taken without regard for location - i simply placed the fruit against the lip of the kitchen sink to prevent it from rolling away ... when i downloaded the photos from my camera the face surprised me and made me laugh out loud !

this is what happens every time i flip through my book by Christina Acosta ... i enjoy her vibrant work, but it affects my regular thinking process ( if it can be called that - regular, i mean )
anyhow, the tree is loosely based on a red maple that almost bit the toilet. i made the mistake of putting some mulch around the base, and ended up replacing it with a new tree, which seems hardier than the first. since it was almost dead anyway, i planted it in the back yard near the compost bins ( since it didn't like having fresh mulch dumped on it i replanted it near the compost bins - mean spirited, eh ? ) and it's doing really well. of course, it might be better if the deer that pass through our yard didn't insist on eating the leaves and chewing on the tiny branches ...

found a piece of plywood scrap ( from a discarded shipping crate in the Fine Arts Center ) on the way home from the gym this morning and dragged it home. a few hours later this was complete

an exercise in breaking all the ''rules'' of painting composition i could think of ... can you find them all ?

inspired by the German cannibal killer butchering his "victim" on video, but with the killer replaced by Roland McMeatie (again, not the same character as the McDonald's corporation's Ronald McDonald) dressed as the puppet / fool in Jan Svankmajer's Faust, filmed in 1994 in the Czech Republic
i hate clowns, especially the corporate spokesclown Roland McMeatie

this morning as i looked out over the backyard i noticed a security detention center that i hadn't noticed before, which is odd because i'd just mowed the grass a few days ago ; you'd think i'd have noticed it then
after talking it over, we decided to do something nice for the men being held captive in our yard ... as my wife and i were taking Rice Crispy squares and Tang out to them, some nut in a camouflaged quail-hunting jacket, with an embroidered nametag reading "Cheney", popped-up and fired a shotgun in my face. long story short, apparently when i voted in the last presidential election there was some fine print on the form about allowing the Federal Government to keep "security detainees" on my private property indefinitely
Caveat Emptor, voters !

pretty self explanatory, i think. since childhood i've been fascinated by the Bird Cult of Rapa Nui ( Easter Island ), and the large stone Moai which dot the island, and may well have spelled doom for the civilization

recently i was talking about Stalin's fascination with Hitler, and the shrine he had assembled with bits and pieces sent back from Germany after the fall of Berlin. from time to time Stalin would go deep into the belly of the Kremlin and look through the possessions of Hitler, the fragments of Hitler's body, drawings, miscellaneous papers, etc., and silently pass the time until he was done
that conversation got me thinking - if Stalin had one of Hitler's uniforms, would he have tried it on in an attempt to get a better insight into Hitler's mind ? obviously i believe he would have worn Eva's panties underneath the Nazi uniform - for the purposes of ''closure'', of course

my introduction to Miffy was the story of a friend's daughter who had a favourite book. after getting details of the museum Miffy visited i made a copy of a painting and a mobile, which Alma pointed to each time her parents read her the story. cute, huh ?
Miffy is not a serious problem like Hello Kitty or the Teletubbies ...

Patterns of Force 01
after thinking about what uniforms meant to many, the ancillary aspects of garment making came into play ... what feelings would a pattern for Nazi uniforms generate ? the juxtaposition of military conquest and homemaking seemed interesting
as the Nazis are perhaps the most widely vilified political party in the modern world they
should logically have the greatest impact (see the British uniform pattern package and verify
this for yourself)

Many Shall Come Saying "I am" ...
the original concept for this grouping of paintings was to make a set of black and white portraits of mass murderers, political or religious, and those who may one day prove deadly. in Luke Jesus predicts "Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am [Christ]" and indeed many have
having recently painted a quick study of Hitler and a portrait of Stalin, i omitted them here
perhaps the biggest surprise was how little i cared about the likeness of these men : i have so little respect for them, and spent half an hour, at most, on each
