an oval canvas that set me back something like 50c at our local St. Vinnies thrift shop, finally completed today
been wanting to paint this for a while now ... picked up a brush on impulse on 2006.05.23 without any real concept of what i'd paint - my ever-present model is always an easy option
maybe i'll be painting more now - really needed a break after the exhausting Painting-A-Day project (see my P.A.D. page for details of the many paintings i forced myself to hurry thorugh, one each day)
oval 16x20'' O/C, well under two hours total
yesterday i blocked-in this face and figure, background shape elements, a few layers of hair color and the facial structure today i look at it and think ''Boring'' !
so i re-paint the face thinking it'll come to me - inspiration - but instead i mix several pallets of flesh tones and paint the face about eight times, which is cool, just wishing i'd photographed each of them since most were beautiful. None of them were anyone i knew or any likeness in particular, nothing i was trying to do - just playing around ... and then Martha Stewart showed up, so i called it quits. added a UFO with All-Seeing-Eye, rocket flowers and airborne hearts, etc. - whatever came to me at the moment : total mental breakdown
11x14'' O/C
this was posted in a step-wise development on my Flickr account
9x12'' O/C
it really bothers me that i can't remember her name ... but it's been about twenty-five years. looking at photos the other day i saw one that reminded me of her : the person was wearing eye shadow, and this girl wore lots of blue and fuscia shadow, and what i can only describe as prom dresses ... she worked in an upscale fashion retail location so at the time it seemed normal. she was a big girl, too - well over six feet with a rock-solid lean build. of course she always wore heels, so you can imagine how she towered over most people
she was a total 80s girl - she loved blow (both kinds - she lived to consume white stuff with her face) and eventually moved in with a seedy drug peddler. i wonder if she's still alive
had to look at this one for a while before i realized the hairline near her ear was too close to her eye, and then was able to fix it. this is a good example of why i don't like to work from memory

full title : ''2006.06.19 - Operation Game - Brain Surgery''
the little man in my brain who keeps telling me to do things
11x14'' oil on canvas - and, as usual, lenscrafters could have made me a pair
of corrective glasses in the time it took to paint this
yesterday i pulled a fresh 18x24'' canvas off the pile and started painting. Leonardo never finished his Mona Lisa - like an early James Ensor he worked on it from time to time, and it was ultimately found among his possessions when he died
i've reproduced this basic painting with different elements included (as in Chip! and Mona McMeaty) many times, but had never done a fun, off-the-cuff ''complete'' impression-copy before
18x24'' oil on canvas - i had a beer, listened to music, and danced for about five or six
hours, at the end of which this painting was completed
never be afraid to be yourself
be your best authentic self you can be
people may ignore you, reject you, or dislike you - but you will not be rejected for trying to be someone you are not
never stop reaching out to people who like you as you are, and trying to find others who may also accept you, just for you
above all remain true to yourself
the detail shot of Neverfear clearly reveals the eye from an earlier painting involving Martha Stewart ... the eye was in the ideal position, and her mouth also remains - about where the ave's tongue would be
11x14'' oil on canvas - under twenty minutes ?
this clown was looking like a crazed serial killer (like i always say about clowns) until i painted the distracting clown on his robes (t-shirt?) - with hair like that there is no room for a nimbus !
12x16'' oil on canvas - well under two hours
Twig is the chubby cat who owns two people i know ... nice people at whom he screams for food - and he don't need it, Baby !
painted on a book cover (after removing the text block i added a new internal spine cover) which can be made into a photo album for his pictures - or maybe pictures of his favorite treat, Fish Flakes
nominal 9.125x7.5'' oil on reclaimed book cover
quick study of Guinevere, King Arthur's main squeeze, and possibly Lancelot's
9x12'' O/C
recently i was introduced to a small fez-sporting toy ... when i was in Egypt i picked up a handmade Fez for Brad, a co-worker, as his gift. we programmers took turns wearing it, which i began calling ''the Fez of invincibility'', during our networked Hearts games

as a native New Yorker i've had precious little to say about this ... only done a few sketches, and left one painting (started before the terror attack) unfinished, and sold that off, just to be rid of it
24x30'' O/C
as per usual, my digital photo is lacking. i've only pulled this one out a few times in over a year, and decided to putz around with this again today - the never-ending WIP
g-d knows when i'll work on it again
update of a previous version
enjoy!

this idea has been kicking around for a long time now ... what kind of tattoo would a parrot get ? since he can't have a full-size pirate on his shoulder, maybe a tattoo would be the next best thing
not entirely happy with the results, i'll darken the background when it's a little drier
